The most famous exponent of Sikki craft was Bindeshwari Devi. She had received National Award for Sikki craft in 1969, from the hands of Shri Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India and her house proudly showcases the faded framed photograph of that occasion.
She was a child widow. She came back to her parent’s house and then started practicing sikki craft to take it to a great height. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, the great craft exponent, has a page on her in her famous book on Indian Handicrafts.
Bindeshwari Devi had traveled to Festival of India events to other countries and the family keeps clippings from articles written in German and other foreign newspapers on her craft.
