A paper presented by Wim van Zanten states there is a well-known quotation from Amadou Hampaté B (1901-91): ‘In Africa, when an old person dies a library burns down’. I give this reference in the Indian context where each passing year, libraries are burning down without any documentation of their indigenous-evolution of art forms, styles and oral histories of art traditions. We are in urgent need to document such ‘libraries’ of India, for the future of present and next generations, art communities, researchers and even art lovers.
