भारतवर्ष में बिहार का योगदान वर्तमान में क्या है, अतीत में क्या था, यह कोई प्रश्न नहीं है? इस बात को यूं कहें कि भारत की आत्मा ही बिहार है तो इसमें कोई अत्युक्ति नहीं होगी। सिर्फ थोड़ा-सा अपने दिमाग पर जोर डालने की जरूरत है। यहां संदर्भ सिर्फ चाक्षुष कला को लेकर है। सन् 1790 ई. से वर्तमान समय में चाक्षुष कला की क्या परिस्थितियां रहीं? क्या बदलाव आये? और उसमें बिहार का क्या योगदान रहा। “पटना कलम के बाद: बिहार की कला” पुस्तक में इसी विषय को केंद्र में रखा गया है।

मुगल कला राजे-रजवाड़े और दरबारों तक ही सीमित रही। उससे भारत का वास्तविक रूप देखने को कभी नहीं मिला। जैन और बौद्ध कला आध्यात्म और धर्म के बीच फंसी रही, राजपूत या राजस्थान शैली तथा पहाड़ी लघु चित्रकला धर्म के इर्द-गिर्द ही घूमती रही। आम जनमानस को प्रस्तुत करने वाली यदि कोई कला भारत में कही जा सकती है वह पटना कलम ही प्रस्तुत करती है। अब इसे चाहे अंग्रेजों का योगदान कहें या हमारी संस्कृति यानी मुगल कला को समाप्त करने की साजिश, लेकिन भारत की आत्मा की तस्वीर पटना कलम ही प्रस्तुत करता है। इसे हम उस समय के दैनिक कार्यों का दस्तावेजीकरण भी कह सकते हैं।

अंग्रेजों ने पटना कलम में निरंतरता तथा उसे जीवित रखने का सफल प्रयास किया। कला एवं शिल्प महाविद्यालय, पटना की सन् 1939 ई. में स्थापना इसका मूल उद्देश्य था। उसके बाद पटना कलम कितने वर्षों तक जीवित रही या वह रूपांतरित होकर किस दिशा में चली गई। इसकी आवश्यकता ही इस पुस्तक के प्रकाश में आने की भूमिका गढ़ती है। क्या अपनी नई भूमिका में पटना कलम सफल हुई या दिशा विहीन हो गई। यह प्रस्तुति पुस्तक के रूप में आपके समक्ष है।
